Flyfishing Club

About the Club.....

The Mayfly Angling Club, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, began life as the Ferranti Angling Club way back in the 1970's (- must have been hard to walk in those platformed, flared waders?!) . While Ferranti no longer exists, the club has been kept alive and well and it's members compete each year for the George Steele Memorial Trophy (named in honour of one of the founder members).

The Club also introduced the Dave Reilly Trophy, which is awarded to the member catching the largest fish during club competitive outings. This trophy was named in honour of a loyal member of the club - 'Big Davie Reilly' who sadly passed away in 2002.

Only one of the original members of the Ferranti Club remains a member to this day - Malcolm Tunnah. The other members have been introduced through a variety of routes over the years - family, friends, work colleagues, folk met in pubs etc. The clubs members enjoy their fishing but don't take things too seriously, there are after all other distractions in life to enjoy (women, beer, skiing, football... to name but a few) - there's nowt more dull than someone with just one interest (look at John Wilson? -  nuff said).

Each year we have around 10 competitive outings to trout fly-fishing venues such as Menteith, Leven, North Third, Bangour and Burnhouse.

We also enjoy a long weekend away once a year to try our hand (normally unsuccessfully!) at fishing for some wild brownies in exotic places like Rum, Melfort, Mull, Skye, Gairloch and Scourie.  Over the last few years one of our favourites has become Melfort Pier and Harbour where you can fish for wild Brownies in the afternoon then wrestle with giant common skate in the evening (see photo gallery) -  we once landed 3 skate between around 80 and 120lbs with many more being lost.

Each season the Mayfly Club competes against the GEC Angling Club (another Ferranti splinter club) for the Ferranti Shield at the Lake of Menteith.

Anyway, hope that gives you an insight into what the clubs all about.

Hope you enjoy taking a look through some of our other pages.
