Flyfishing Club

MAYFLY ANGLING CLUB RULES

 1. General.

a) Members must at all times observe the rules of the fishery. Members must ensure they are aware of the fishery rules prior to fishing.

b) A member must commit himself to attend an outing at least one week in advance. Once committed, he will be eligible to pay for his share of the fee. Any costs incurred to the club through late withdrawal of an angler to attend an outing will be passed on to the individual concerned. It is the responsibility of the member dropping out within seven days of the outing to find a replacement to fill his place.

c) There shall be a priority for individuals who are on the official waiting list to fill  vacant positions for outings.

d) In the event of members fishing in inter-club competitions or booking personal outings under the clubs name, at least one person attending must be a member of the club committee or be nominated as club representative by the management committee. Where a club member cannot attend a venue due to him representing the club in a major competition, he will be awarded an attendance point

e) Any angler balloted out in a draw for an outing will be guaranteed automatic placing in the next venue in the club's calendar. If someone is balloted out of the draw for boats and the venue has bank fishing, then those fishing from the bank will be automatically given boat placing at the next boat/bank trip within the same season.

f) Club members should present themselves to weigh-in within 15 minutes of the end of the fishing session, or at a time mutually agreed prior to commencement of fishing. Failure to do so may result in the club member forfeiting any points or awards for that outing.

g) Members catching their limit well before the end of a session may choose to weigh in early. In this event the catch will count only when the weigh in was witnessed by a member of staff from the fishery or another club member subject to the satisfaction of the club secretary.

h) When bank fishing, after reaching the specified catch limit in a single location, the member should move from his spot to allow others access.

i) Members are not permitted to use any ‘non-hooked’ bite indicators (‘floats’) during club outings. (Note for clarity - this still allows the use of static bright/buoyant hooked flies as indicators)

j) No member to enter fishing area or start fishing until all monies are paid to treasurer and the fishery. Any latecomers will pay for own permit to fishery staff and pay sweep money before weigh in.

k) If club or fishery rules are broken (subject to the management committee's judgement) the member/s responsible will be disqualified and forfeit all points for that outing.

2. Boat Fishing

a) If boat fishing, a rota should be agreed before commencement of the outing.

b) No casting across the boat is allowed, unless permitted to do so by boat partners. If this has been agreed, the angler must still ask each time he/she is going to cast.

c) No boat shall fish within casting distance of another boat.

d) Under no circumstances shall any boat cross the drift of another within 50 yards while under power or rowing.  Cross drifting due to using a drogue is unavoidable and therefore acceptable providing it is not within the casting distance of the upwind anglers. Any boat joining a drift should be at least 200 yards from other boats within the same drift.

3) Point System

a) There shall be a points system for determining the outcome of the annual club championship.

1 point to be awarded for attending an outing or being drawn reserve.

1 point to be awarded for each fish caught up to a maximum of the bag limit for the outing.

4 points to be awarded to the angler with the heaviest bag of the day.

3 points to be awarded to the runner up.

2 points to be awarded for 3rd position.

1 point to be awarded for 4th position.

1 point to be awarded for the heaviest fish of the day caught as part of the bag limit

b) All catches must be weighed by consistent means - for example, directly in the tray provided by the fishery (i.e. not in a bag).

c) In the event of a tie in weight, the position for contention and the lower one(s) value in points shall be added together and divided by the number of ties, except where the quantity of fish is different, then the largest basket will qualify for the position being contested.

d) Any fish over 5lbs in weight will be counted as 5lbs towards the total basket weight unless agreed that this limitation be modified or waived for a specific venue prior to commencement of fishing.

e) When a fishery requires any fish hooked and netted that is over 10lbs (or other weight limit set by the fishery) to be returned, the following rules apply:

  • The fish is to be weighed and returned by fishery staff.

  • The fish will count as one caught fish (one point) as part of the bag limit established either by the fishery or at the start of the outing, with its weight being recorded as 5 lbs towards the anglers bag weight.

  • The fish's full weight will count towards heaviest fish of the season.

  • Club members MUST weigh in when they reach their bag limit (with any fish returned by the method above counting towards that limit) - any fish caught after the weigh in will not count towards the points/bag weight awarded for the day, or for the heaviest fish of the year competition.

f) For venues operating a catch and release system, members must obey the rules of the fishery in terms of using barbless hooks. No points will be awarded for fish caught beyond the limit set on the  permit.

g) Prizes will be awarded at the AGM for the winners of the preceding season competitions.

h) George Steel Memorial Cup will be awarded to the angler with the highest point score.  The best seven scoring outings for each member will count towards the years total, with the winner being the angler with the highest total score for those seven outings. In the event of a tie in points, the Trophy will be awarded to the angler with the heaviest bag weight across those 7 outings.

i) Dave Reilly Trophy will be awarded to the member weighing in the heaviest fish caught during a competitive outing.

Any angler found to break any of the above rules may forfeit his membership with the club, subject to the management committee's judgement.
